Two of four blue outdoor mail collection boxes likely will be removed as early as this week along Greensburg’s South Pennsylvania Avenue, across the street from the post office.

Some residents have expressed concern about the removal of the boxes, which was indicated with 30-day notices posted on the boxes Oct. 16.

Regional U.S. Postal Service spokesman Mark Lawrence indicated the decision to remove the boxes was based on how much they were being used.

“The Postal Service reviews collection box density every year on a routine basis to identify redundant/seldom used collection boxes,” Lawrence said. “Based on the density testing, boxes are identified for potential removal, and notices are placed on boxes to notify customers.

“This process is one of the many ways the Postal Service makes adjustments to our infrastructure to match resources and needs.”

Lawrence said postal officials don’t expect the change will have any impact on Greensburg mail customers since two boxes will remain in place along the curb in front of the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library.
