Registration open for 32nd annual Greensburg Turkey Trot
Halloween is still several weeks away, but it’s not too early to start making plans for Thanksgiving Day.
About 2,300 people started last year’s turkey day by running or walking in Greensburg’s 5K Turkey Trot.
With registration now open, organizers are hoping to attract the same or more participants for the 32nd annual race, set for Nov. 23.
This year’s event will begin at 9 a.m. at the newly reconstructed Westmoreland County Courthouse plaza, at Main and Otterman streets in Greensburg. The event appeals to casual or competitive participants of all ages and is open to canine companions as well.
“Each year, we exceed our expectations, and the turnout is incredible,”said Mark Sorice, race committee chairman and one of the founders of the event. “The entire community gathers for one festive event on Thanksgiving Day to create a tremendous experience.”
Sorice and four running friends started the race and a nonprofit — Westmoreland Community Sharing — to develop the event. Race proceeds benefit several other local nonprofits, including the Greensburg YMCA, the YWCA of Westmoreland County and the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department.
The $10 registration fee for dogs taking part in the race benefits the Humane Society of Westmoreland County.
Nov. 9 is the deadline for registration at $25 or $35 for adults and $15 or $25 for kids 13 or younger, depending on the type of commemorative T-shirt desired. The fee is $35 for all who register after the deadline.
Race participants can enter individually or as part of a team.
