Safety concerns on a Route 136 bridge prompted it being closed earlier than anticipated for reconstruction.

Safety concerns on a small bridge in Rostraver resulted in it being closed earlier than anticipated for reconstruction.

PennDOT District 12 press officer Laina Aquiline said the agency’s bridge safety team noticed structural changes on the bridge that carries Route 136 over a stream known as Pollock Run.

“Originally set to close on April 1 for replacement, the bridge was shut down sooner to prioritize safety,” she said.

The section of Route 136 just outside West Newton between the intersections of Route 201 and Coal Hollow Road closed last week. It is expected to be closed through late August. About 2,500 vehicles use Route 136 in that area daily, according to a PennDOT traffic volume map.

Ligonier Construction Company is preparing for a $5.28 million replacement project. The posted detour sends traffic onto Routes 201, 51 and 136.
