Dr. Pascal Spino (middle) is applauded during a ceremony honoring his decades of service as a Greensburg pediatrician on October 21, 2010. A bust of Dr. Spino was unveiled during the ceremony, held at the Pediatric Associates of Westmoreland office in Greensburg.

Greensburg pediatrician Dr. Pascal Spino devoted himself to generations of young patients during a career that spanned more than 60 years.

That commitment included long hours at the office, a calm, caring bedside manner and a readiness to waive fees for those who couldn’t afford health care.

His work earned him many accolades during his 91 years — including the Citizens Service Before Self Honor from the Medal of Honor Association.

Now, nearly a decade after his death in 2013, Greensburg’s Seton Hill University likewise is recognizing Spino’s admirable qualities, during a Kindness Day program.

The event is set for 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Monday in Reichgut Concert Hall at the university’s Performing Arts Center, 100 Harrison Ave., Greensburg.

Presenters will “talk about the legacy that Dr. Spino left and how that role of kindness ties into our mission at Seton Hill,” said James Pirlo, the university’s associate director of principal gifts. “We’re going to have students present on how each of our university pillars — welcoming, learning, serving and celebrating — touches on the legacy of Dr. Spino.”

A slide show of photos featuring Spino and his family will help to celebrate his life and achievements, Pirlo said.

The Spino family’s relationship with Seton Hill includes having enrolled the doctor’s children in the university’s kindergarten program. His wife, Aida, volunteered during Christmas and other events at the university, Pirlo said.

Regarding the university’s founding religious community, Pirlo said, the doctor “had an affinity with the Sisters of Charity. He really believed in their mission and work.”

The Kindness Day program will conclude with snacks and refreshments.
