SUV crash closes Westmoreland City post office; operations shift to Manor facility
The Westmoreland City Post Office was closed until further notice Monday after an SUV crashed into it.
North Huntingdon Township building inspector Tom McGuire said the SUV damaged a load-bearing wall that faces the parking lot.
“The building’s going to be condemned until it’s repaired,” he said.
That is a common practice in this type of situation, he said, and once it is made structurally safe, the post office can reopen. A gaping hole exposed insulation and wood framing with bricks littering the floor.
Westmoreland City Fire Chief Mike Doshen said no one was hurt. There was one person in the SUV.
“It’s going to affect business,” he said.
The crash was reported before 9 a.m. at the building on Walnut Street. Caution tape was wrapped around the front of it after the SUV was removed. A couple would-be customers were stunned when they stopped by afterwards.
Customers who have post office boxes at the Westmoreland City location can pick up their mail at the Manor Post Office, 9 Atlantic Ave. That post office is open 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays 9 a.m. -noon. A photo identification will be required to pick up mail.
Mail delivery in Westmoreland City will continue as normal, but customers should visit the Manor location to pick up vacation mail, items that require a signature or oversized pieces of mail.
There was no time frame provided for when the Westmoreland City location might reopen. North Huntingdon police did not release any information about the crash.
