Adelphoi has multiple juvenile facilities in Westmoreland, Fayette and Somerset counties.

A teen housed in one of Adelphoi’s intensive supervision homes in Unity was charged with assaulting an Adelphoi employee on New Year’s Day, police said.

State police were called to the Adelphoi Sweeney Home on Mission Road on Wednesday for a report of an assault on a staff member.

The staff member told police he was breaking up a fight between two juveniles when Jesus Ayala, 18, attacked him from behind and punched him numerous times in the head, according to court records.

The male staffer went to the Latrobe Hospital emergency room and was diagnosed with a head injury, police said.

Police said Ayala spoke with them afterward, apologizing for the attack and stating he did not know why he did it.

Ayala was placed into Adelphoi’s care by court order and is under the legal care of the Bucks County Juvenile Probation office, which is seeking to ensure that Ayala is jailed following the incident.

Ayala was charged with felony aggravated assault and was taken to Westmoreland County Prison. A Jan. 13 preliminary hearing is set in Tamara Mahady’s Unity court. An attorney for Ayala was not listed in court records.

Adelphoi has intensive supervision facilities in Unity, Derry Township, Connellsville and Jenner in Somerset County.
