A talk with John Van Hamersveld, artist behind ‘Era of Cool’ exhibit at The Westmoreland

“Era of Cool: The Art of John Van Hamersveld” is in its final weeks at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg. Van Hamersveld’s graphic design pieces provide a visual tour of rock ’n’ roll history.
A former art director of Capitol Records, Van Hamersveld designed iconic album covers such as The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour,” The Grateful Dead’s “Skeletons in the Closet,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street,” as well as concert posters for artists like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Cream and many others.
The exhibition, which opened July 20, continues through Oct. 20.
Van Hamersveld sat down with the Tribune-Review to discuss his work, including the groundbreaking poster he designed for the 1966 surfing movie “The Endless Summer,” as well as what it was like to hang out with Mick Jagger.
