As state troopers and the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Department interrupted a suspected heroin transaction in Hempfield late Wednesday, two of the alleged participants sped off in a car, leading officers on a 5-mile chase that was called off after speeds exceeded 90 mph, according to court documents.
On Friday, police arrested Chad Caye, 21, of Adamsburg, and Chance D. Goodlin, 20, of Youngwood, who allegedly were in the getaway car and in the process of selling heroin to a Greensburg woman about 10 p.m. along the 400 block of Fosterville Road, just outside of Youngwood. Coye and Goodlin were arraigned before Youngwood District Judge Anthony Bompiani on possession, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and escape.
Sheriff’s deputy John Dixon reported in court documents that the chase traversed rural Fosterville, Swede Hill, Baltzer Meyer Pike, Wolfe’s Nursery, Goodlin, and Silvis Farm roads before entering Youngwood on Depot and Grandview streets before it was called off near 7th Street.
“(Caye) continued from Fosterville on to Swede Hill without signaling and failed to stop at a stop sign and flashing red light at more than 80 mph in a 25 mph zone,” Dixon wrote.
Dixon said he saw Caye’s vehicle “go airborne” as it crossed the Fosterville Road and Baltzer Meyer Pike intersection. Along Baltzer Meyer Pike, Dixon said Caye’s vehicle was “fishtailing,” traveling at least 90 mph in a posted 45 mph zone “with another oncoming motorist approaching.”
Caye, who was driving the car, is charged with fleeing and eluding police, eight counts of reckless driving, five counts of ignoring stop signs and driving on a suspended license.
The men were identified through the alleged buyer who was apprehended at the scene and has not yet been charged. Police confiscated just a “small amount of heroin” because the sale was interrupted.
Caye and Goodlin were ordered held in the county prison after failing to post $10,000 and $20,000 bail, respectively. Preliminary hearings are scheduled July 2.
