The NBA season may be have wrapped up, but basketball fans in Delmont will have reason to celebrate this summer.

Construction to replace the aging former basketball court at Newhouse Park is under way, with a brand-new court surface in place.

The court was funded largely through a $50,000 donation from Salem-based Dedicated Nursing Associates. Their contribution brought the borough’s share down to about $17,000. A grant refund and a donation from the Delmont Recreation Board covered the roughly $79,000 cost.

In addition, the Newhouse Park pavilion is slowly seeing some renovations thanks to volunteers from the Delmont-Salem Rotary. Rotary officials said frequent rain has made it tougher to complete the work, but it is ongoing.

“They aren’t 100% done yet but it does look really nice up there,” said borough Councilman Stan Cheyne, who proposed waiving the pavilion rental fee for a decade for the Rotary’s annual fundraiser. Council approved Cheyne’s motion by a 5-0 vote.

Cheyne also asked the borough’s solicitor to look into adding a security deposit for park rentals, to help guard against damage to the work Rotary members have done.
