Volunteers needed to raise flags honoring veterans at West Newton Cemetery
Volunteers are needed on May 13 to help raise 385 U.S. flags honoring local deceased military veterans at West Newton Cemetery.
The full-sized flags, donated by families of the veterans, are part of a West Newton Avenue of Flags display lining the roads of the cemetery. This 29th edition of the display will be available for public viewing during cemetery opening hours through Memorial Day and continuing until June 3, when volunteers again will be needed to help take down the flags.
Members of the Yough High School football team, West Newton VFW post and West Newton Moose lodge are among volunteers expected to help raise 10-foot flagpoles, attach plaques and unfold flags for the display.
Others are welcome to pitch in by reporting at 9 a.m. May 13 at the cemetery office, 210 Vernon Drive.
Tools will be available, and doughnuts and pizza will be provided.
