A man who was pulled over by Westmoreland County sheriff’s deputies in Youngwood was ordered held without bail Tuesday after authorities discovered he was wanted on a federal warrant for possessing a large amount of fentanyl.
Sheriff’s Deputy John Dixon and Sgt. Irvin Shipley were in an unmarked vehicle about 3:45 p.m. Monday when they saw a 2003 Cadillac fail to stop at a stop sign while heading north on South 10th Street at Painter Street toward the Youngwood Park ‘N Pool parking lot.
After the traffic stop, Dixon said he learned the driver, Devon M. Davis, 28, of Pittsburgh, was wanted by the FBI on an arrest warrant for possessing more than 40 grams of fentanyl and firearms charges.
Also inside the car were Jayme T. Keeton, 27, of Wilkinsburg, and Robert L. Smiley, 29, of Pittsburgh, according to Dixon.
“The rear seat passenger (Smiley) attempted to place his hand on a blue bag at his feet and Sgt. Shipley directed him to stay away from the bag,” Dixon said.
Inside the bag, deputies discovered a loaded .380 caliber handgun “with the safety in the off position,” Dixon said.
Deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car and, after a search, confiscated a small amount of marijuana, six cell phones and a digital scale.
Dixon said the handgun was reported stolen May 30 in the Uniontown area.
According to court dockets, the trio are convicted felons and each was charged by Dixon with illegal possession of a loaded firearm, possessing a firearm without a license and receiving stolen property.
Davis is charged with driving on a suspended license and failing to stop at a stop sign.
Smiley is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Davis was ordered held without bail in the county prison due to the federal charges, while Keeton and Smiley were ordered held in the prison after failing to post $50,000 bail each pending preliminary hearings Aug. 13.
