Westmoreland veterans health clinic will expand with move to Greensburg
An expanded outpatient clinic for Westmoreland County veterans is expected to open in two years at a new location in Greensburg.
VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System announced Friday that its Westmoreland clinic will be moving about one mile west, from its space behind Westmoreland Mall to a site that will be constructed along Towne Square Drive. It will be located next to a former Gander Mountain store.
The new location near the Hartman Eye Group office will provide 33,900 square feet of usable space, compared to the 17,000 square feet the clinic now occupies amid a strip of retail shops in Hempfield.
“This is a huge win for the veterans of Westmoreland County,” said Matt Zamosky, director of the county’s Veterans Affairs Office. “It will be significantly bigger than what we have and it will be designed as a treatment center.
“It will bring a lot of services into the community. Having all that available can help prevent veterans from having to go to Monroeville or Pittsburgh or another (VA medical facility).”
With the county’s estimated population of close to 22,000 veterans having a median age of 68, he said, “Travel can sometimes be an issue.”
The General Services Administration secured the new clinic site on Jan. 28, when it awarded an $8.7 million, 15-year build-to-suit lease to Michael Downing Realty of Cleveland, Ohio.
While the existing Westmoreland VA clinic is staffed by employees of Valor Healthcare, VA employees will operate the new clinic.
“It is our goal to offer all Valor employees who want one a job at the new clinic,” said Shelley Nulph, public and community relations manager for VA Pittsburgh Healthcare. “We will work with Valor and the team at the clinic to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible for our veterans.”
There will be extra space for veterans to receive specialty care such as audiology, chiropractic, acupuncture and physical therapy. An infusion room will be used for some hematology, oncology and chemotherapy treatments.
According to VA Pittsburgh, there also will be a dedicated clinical space for specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology and ear, nose and throat care to rotate from its other regional locations.
An office space will be available for veterans to meet with representatives of the Veterans Benefits Administration, the American Legion, VFW and other veterans service groups.
The Westmoreland veterans clinic, which opened in 2007, is the final one in the Pittsburgh region to be upgraded. Other facilities, such as those based in Fayette, Washington and Beaver counties, already have been updated and rebuilt.
A two-story, 64,000-square-foot clinic opened in 2023 on property behind Monroeville Mall.
