Youngest Delmont Visionary Committee member, 9, builds community sled bin
Roscoe List loves sledding. And he loves helping people.
For those who know the 9-year-old Delmont resident, it will then come as little surprise that List opted to combine those two things and recruit his parents to help build a bin he plans to fill with sleds and install in Newhouse Park.
“That way, anyone who wants can sled at Newhouse Park, which is what I love doing in the winter,” List said.
List is the youngest member of the Delmont Visionary Committee, whose members have written grants and undertaken projects to help beautify the borough.
“I like Delmont and my grandparents have lived here a very long time,” said List. “With the committee, I get to do a lot of stuff most people don’t.”
Helping out is a trait that runs in the family — List’s mother Amanda is on the committee’s board of directors, and List’s uncle Ed Washburn built the Delmont Food Pantry in Rose Wigfield Parklet on Greensburg Street.
List has also run a summertime lemonade stand, the proceeds of which have gone toward stocking his uncle’s food pantry, removing unwanted plastic from the ocean and planting trees.
“He came up with the sled bin idea last winter, but we ran out of snow before we could make it happen,” said Amanda List. “Roscoe and his sister and I all volunteer at the Salvation Army, and they told us they’re going to keep an eye out for any sleds that come in so they can add them to the bin. And Uncle Ed said he’s committed to donating a couple sleds as well.”
Roscoe and his father Josh spent about four hours constructing the bin. On Wednesday evening, List brought a thank-you card to Decal Kreations in Delmont, which supplied a sign for the sled bin.
“Roscoe put $20 in the card as a thank-you, and the owner shook his hand, gave it back and said, ‘Go buy a sled,’” his mother said.
Anyone wishing to donate a sled can do so by emailing amandajanelist@yahoo.com.
