Woman's car hit by train late Friday in Etna, her condition unknown after she was taken to hospital

Etna Police are investigating an incident involving a woman driving a Honda CR-V that was hit by a train Friday night, April 28.

The crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on train tracks running under the 62nd Street Bridge. The unidentified woman was trapped in the vehicle but was freed by first responders. She was taken to an area hospital and was in stable condition, according to Etna Borough Police Chief Timothy Rodman. Rodman said she was the only one in the vehicle.

Etna Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Todd Lunn said he believes the driver became disoriented before the crash occurred.

“The report was that she may have possibly missed a turn and went back along the (Etna Riverfront Trail) Park there to get turned around and somehow ended up on the tracks,” said Todd Lunn, assistant chief of the Etna Volunteer Fire Department. “We were alerted for a car stuck on the train tracks, and then it got upgraded to a car hit by train, followed by someone possibly entrapped.”

Lunn said first responders managed to pry open the driver’s side door and free the woman.

In addition to the Etna fire department, Shaler/Hampton EMS and Etna police responded.

Lunn said the conductor confirmed that nothing was leaking from the train and that the train had not jumped the track.
