Squirrel Hill house in Murdoch Farms on the market for $1,399,000
Located in Squirrel Hill in the area of Murdoch Farms, once a nursery and dairy farm, a home that bas been in the same family since 1948 is on the market for $1,399,000.
A two-story colonial, the residence has a 1201 Bennington Ave. address, but the entrance is on Fair Oaks Street.
“The homes in this area are some of the most sought-after homes in Squirrel Hill,” said Mollie Hanna Lang, realtor for Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “The tree-lined streets and the uniqueness of the architecture make it attractive. It’s a historic neighborhood.”
The style is mid-century modern, Lang said. In the 1970s or early 1980s, renowned architect Herbie Seigle was hired for a refresh of the house, which is located on a corner lot. Lang said that might have been when the original front door of the home was moved because of an addition.
The front door is adorned with circular bottle-glass details and opens into a mirrored entryway. The hardwood floors have been well-maintained.
The open floor plan creates a glamorous flow, ideal for entertaining, Lang said. The living room has a vaulted ceiling and enormous picture windows. Those large windows were also incorporated in the addition that includes a sunken family room.
“Even on dark and rainy days, there is still so much daylight in this room,” Lang said. “It always feels bright.”
The eat-in kitchen features a SubZero refrigerator and a luxury Viking professional six-burner oven. French doors lead out to a patio and the house has an outside area with some privacy created by trees and shrubbery and a nice yard.
There are three bedrooms on the second floor, all with full bathrooms, as well as an office.
The 3,418 square-foot house also has two half bathrooms. The bathrooms are vintage with colorful porcelain tubs, sinks and toilets in hues such as blues and pinks.
The finished basement includes the original retro bar in a bright red hue. A two-car integral garage is hidden behind the house. There is a sizable laundry room.
“There are so many memories here,” Lang said. “They’ve taken wonderful care of this home for decades.”
