Knowing that good weather is in store for the holiday weekend, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the last minute is offering $1 fishing licenses for Labor Day, Sept. 7, only.
However, there is one caveat: the Fish and Boat Commission are reminding anglers and boaters to practice safe boating and sobriety.
“We know that a lot of people are looking forward to getting out on the water this holiday weekend,” said Col. Corey Britcher, director of the fish commission Bureau of Law Enforcement. “Our goal is to make sure they get home safely.”
Waterways conservation officers will be out in full force throughout the state.
“All of our officers will be out for the holiday weekend enforcing fishing and boating laws,” said Sgt. Mike Walsh of the fish commission ’s southwest office in Somerset.
Residents should consider picking up a rod on Labor Day, he said. “For people who have not been fishing for a while and want to give it a try, $1 a day is a bargain and a great way to get back out there,” Walsh said.
The special $1 Labor Day license is available online only through The Outdoor Shop, which can be accessed from the FishBoatPA mobile app, or the PFBC website.
Fishing licenses may be printed or saved digitally and displayed on a phone or other smart device.
To date this year, there have been nine boating-related fatalities in Pennsylvania, according to a fish commission release. Alcohol use is suspected in three of the cases.
All nine victims were not wearing life jackets. At least five of the victims had either not taken, or it is unknown if they had taken a formal boating education safety course.
In Pennsylvania, anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1982 is required to have a Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate a boat powered by a motor greater than 25 horsepower. All drivers of personal watercraft are required to have a safety certificate from a fish commission-approved boating safety course.
Due to covid-19, in-person instruction is limited at this time but online courses are available.
