State officials pushing proposals to reduce student debt and offer free tuition at public colleges and universities in Pennsylvania are scheduled to rally Wednesday morning in Harrisburg.

A spokesman for Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, said Hughes is expecting hundreds of students from Pennsylvania’s 14-state-owned universities to join lawmakers, university faculty members and education advocates at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the capitol rotunda to rally for the Pennsylvania Promise, a free tuition proposal.

Last week, Hughes and Senators Lindsey Williams, D-West View, and Katie Muth, D-Montgomery, began circulating a proposal calling for the state to establish a fund that would allow debt-strapped college graduates to refinance their college loans at a 2-percent discount.
