Comic explores cybersecurity issues in health care industry

In the field of cybersecurity, words like “infected” and “virus” are typically references to one of the ways computer hackers worm their way into a company’s technology and exploit it.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, that vernacular has taken on a double meaning, as a wide variety of health care services have had to join in a massive migration to the digital realm.
Gary Berman, creator of “The Cyberhero Adventures,” creates comic books that explore various areas of cybersecurity. His latest, “Defending Your Health,” looks at the ways medical professionals and hospitals should be working to safeguard vulnerable patient data.
“Cybersecurity awareness is a critical component of any cyber resilience strategy,” Berman said. “Appropriate cyber hygiene must become part of every health system’s culture the same way they guard against the spread of germs and infections. The CyberHero Adventures series is an impactful and engaging tool to raise employee awareness and materially change behavior.”
Berman started the series by asking cybersecurity experts to submit real-life examples of hacking and what lessons were learned as a result.
“Securing health care infrastructures is an extremely difficult challenge, as the devices within the network are highly specialized, and The CyberHero Adventures series highlights this challenge,” said Anthony James, vice president of product marketing for Infoblox, which provides core network services for companies.
Once a victim of hacking, Berman’s mission with the Cyberhero Adventures is to educate the public about cybersecurity and recognize the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating secure networks for schools, hospitals and businesses.
“People, process and technology can help protect what matters most,” said Tom Brennan, U.S. chairman for Crest International, a nonprofit that accredits and certifies cybersecurity services. “The CyberHero Adventures is an illustration of providing a lighthearted way to communicate the message that can be easily digested.”
