A charter boat captain was helping an angler land a blacktip shark on the deck when the fish bit into his leg and wouldn’t let go.
Rick Caton’s group was having great luck with Spanish mackerel and bluefish on Tuesday when they headed toward a school of blacktip and sharpnose sharks near Hatteras Inlet, reports The Virginian-Pilot.
Caton grabbed a gaff to help bring a blacktip aboard the boat and subdue it when the shark sank its teeth into his calf.
“Ahh! He’s got me, he’s got me!” Caton can be heard shouting in a video of the incident.
A knife is plunged into the shark’s back to release his grip on Caton’s leg.
Caton douses the would with bleach to disinfect the wound and gives another shout of pain.
“Not sure what was worse, the bite or the Clorox. But those things have all kinds of crap in their mouths and I wasn’t taking no chance,” he later told The Virginian-Pilot. “It’s pretty sore today. I’ve got to get it looked at because the nurse that helped me out said she thinks there might still be some teeth in the bone.”
