Crews respond when a Norfolk Southern train derails late Wednesday in New Castle.

Laurel: To gussying up. Prom season is upon us, and it’s important to remember, amid the fancy gowns and limo rides, that not every family can afford the cost of what can be a pricey milestone. For some, it can top $1,000. It’s hard to get in under $100 — which can still hurt right now.

That’s why the Highlands Partnership Network deserves a round of applause for helping in an often overlooked arena. While prom closets are common assists, there are still hair, nails and makeup to consider. The “Get Ready With Us” event, organized by talented volunteers, is a fairy-tale chance for teens who might otherwise miss out.

By providing a safe space at Natrona Heights Presbyterian Church, complete with a makeshift salon, the program not only offers physical transformations but also instills a sense of community and support.

The commitment of project coordinator Jaadyn Hughes and the entire team is commendable. Their efforts exemplify the true spirit of unity and compassion, making a tangible difference in students’ lives.

By removing the worry of costs and ensuring everyone can look and feel their best, the Highlands Partnership Network is fostering inclusivity and equality. Other communities should be inspired to create similar initiatives, spreading the message that everyone deserves to attend prom with confidence, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Lance: To getting off track. Norfolk Southern had another derailment in the region Wednesday.

Crews were still dealing with the incident in New Castle on Thursday morning. The Lawrence County Department of Public Safety was responding to concerns on social media, assuring the public there was no threat, no problem with drinking water and no need to evacuate.

“The only product that escaped one of the cars was soybeans. The only ‘hazardous material’ car that derailed is carrying paraffin wax,” its Facebook post stated.

But people have reason to be concerned, as East Palestine, Ohio, and Beaver County residents are still dealing with cleanup and testing following the February derailment, hazardous leaks and subsequent burning.

With more than 100 derailments in 2022, maybe this is just another day at the office for Norfolk Southern. It isn’t for New Castle, and it shouldn’t be for any community.
