In his letter “Rep. Bob Brooks’ contempt for democracy” (Dec. 16, TribLIVE), Ray Ramondino stated “the only problem with mail-in voting is it allows more people to exercise their constitutional right to vote.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
The real problem with mail-in voting is that there aren’t enough checks to verify that the people casting the mail-in ballots are who they say they are. In this general election, there was lax signature verification, remote drop-off boxes where anyone could drop off phony ballots and an extended deadline for receipt of mail-in ballots. Many invalid mail-in ballots were intermingled with legitimate ballots, making it impossible to remedy problems later.
Invalid mail-in ballots deny voters their right to vote by diluting and canceling out their votes. Many countries do not allow mail-in voting, while others increase their validity checking.
Mail-in voting is a bad idea that invites large-scale fraud.
