Seeing the picture was a gut punch. Several days after the death of Pope Francis, while the Catholic Church was in mourning and preparing to elect a new pope, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated picture of himself dressed in papal garments, wearing a cross and holding up his second finger. If that wasn’t enough, he later trivialized the post and had the audacity to joke, “Catholics loved it.”
Well, Catholics do not love it. Not at all. It is grossly offensive and sacrilegious. In addition to previous insults toward women, veterans, those with physical and mental disabilities, the media, Mexicans, Muslims, war heroes and many others, Trump now took aim at a humble and noble nonjudgmental servant-leader after his death, his successor, and the Catholic Church in general.
There is nothing clever or funny about this mockery, and it is certainly unpresidential.
