Letter to the editor: Teach children hard work, love of country

Memorial Day is a time to reflect. As I remember my late father, a Marine who served in the island-hopping campaign of World War II, I can’t help but compare our nation then to our nation now. I am proud to say my parents were part of the Greatest Generation.

They were patriotic Americans working together to protect America and the world. They had pride, respect and a work ethic that created a strong and prosperous United States of America. The Greatest Generation loved our country and honored our flag. They earned their title the hard way.

Unfortunately, every generation that followed did nothing to teach our children what the Greatest Generation knew and accomplished.

We must start teaching our children about WWII, the Holocaust, pride in our country, respect for our flag, respect for others and the importance of hard work and self-reliance — and we must start now.
