Joshua Turner of Glenshaw successfully completed the Eagle Scout Board of Review on Feb. 1. The son of Wendy and Mark Turner, Joshua led a team of youth and adult volunteers in constructing more than 50 rabbit cubes for the rabbit facility at Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. The wooden cubes also encourage the rabbit’s health by giving them something hard to chew on to keep their teeth healthy. Turner’s design of plain wooden cubes replaces the older ones that were painted and constructed with larger screws, both of which can be harmful to the rabbits. The large number of cubes constructed will allow Animal Friends to send one home with each rabbit to their new forever home. A junior at Shaler Area High School, Turner has volunteered at Animal Friends since 2019, and would like to continue to work with animals, specifically dogs in the military. In the future he would like to pursue a career in carpentry. His dedication and drive are shown not only in his Eagle Scout Rank, but his Black Belt in karate as well. He credits his time and leadership opportunities as a member of Troop 138 in the Japeechen District for his motivation to lead, volunteer and have a heart for animals.
Shaler Area High School senior Hanna Bedeck was named one of Junior Achivement of Western Pennsylvania’s 18 Under Eighteen. She belongs to the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, serves as concertmaster for the Shaler Area High School Orchestra and was named to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Western Region Orchestra and All State Orchestra. Hannah began her music career on the piano at only three years old and has since learned how to play the violin and accordion. She volunteers at her church by playing music for funerals and weddings. She also plays music for elderly patients at nursing homes to make them comfortable despite their diagnoses and situations. Her dedication is evident in her work with dementia patients — specifically her efforts to learn to play new songs and instruments that are significant in a patient’s life.
