At its Sept. 12 meeting, the Shaler board of commissioners unanimously passed a resolution confirming use of the Shaler North Hills Library building for the next 50 years.

It’s part of an agreement to get Keystone Grant funding to add to and upgrade the library’s restroom facilities — “a required form as far as we’re concerned,” according to township manager Christopher Lovato.

Shaler Township is applying for the grant on behalf of the library, so the commissioners approved a motion be amended to allow that.

“The library has been an asset to the community for years and there’s no reason to believe that won’t continue,” Lovaro said.

Otherwise, the grant money would eventually have to be refunded.

In other developments from the meeting, the commissioners unanimously awarded an HVAC project for the library to Air Systems Mechanical with a low bid of $124,614. The commissioners also unanimously approved an extension of the township’s agreement with PennDOT for winter maintenance as well as awarding of the Baumer-Rangley-Parma Storm Sewer Project to the lowest bidder, Nagy Construction & Asphalt Paving. The bid was $73,810.

The need for the project resulted from the failure of the township’s storm system, which led to a few residents ending up with sink holes in their yards.
