For many folks, memories of July 4 celebrations conjure up a long list of outdoor events enjoyed by the entire family — from parades and sporting events to cook outs and fireworks.
This year, Shaler Township is putting an emphasis on family activities as part of its Community Day on July 4 at Kiwanis Park.
“We push family,” Shaler commissioner Susan Fisher said. “The Shaler community is all about family. We try to make this a family event. It’s an all day event and the nice part is having the pool open (until 5 p.m.). We’ll have a DJ at the pool. The little ones as well as the big ones love music. We’ll also have fire truck rides in the afternoon.”
In addition, there will be community tents, face painting and food vendors.
By evening, live music is scheduled with the Uptown Rhythm & Brass Band at 7 p.m. followed by a Military Recognition Ceremony at 8 p.m. and fireworks by Pyrotechnico once it gets dark.
Shaler has plenty to celebrate this Independence Day, thanks in part to the success of Shaler High School’s spring sports teams, including the state champion baseball team and softball and volleyball state finalists.
“We have invited those teams to be recognized and be part of the celebration because we’re so proud of their accomplishments, just like the military,” Fisher said.
“I’d like to stress that we want people to come and have some good food. There (will be) lots of gourmet delights,” Fisher said. “We’re going to have barbecue, pulled pork, kettle corn, funnel cakes, soft drinks, and ice balls.”
She added that the township is always trying to improve its July 4 celebration.
“I just hope everybody will come. With the Jeffery (Elementary) School property now down, we have more room and parking on the site. There’s a little more open space so bring your blanket and have a good time. We feel the 4th of July is the best way to celebrate the community as well as the country.”
Fisher compares Shaler’s Fourth of July Community Day with the high school’s Homecoming celebration.
“You see generations of families that come year after year,” she said. “Families stay here and families that don’t stay here come back. It’s tradition and Shaler is such a unique community. There is such a sense of pride and that’s what makes it very special.”
