The 3ICE hockey league, which involves almost strictly three-on-three play, will kick off its second season at the Clearview Arena within the Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center on Neville Island on June 28.
Former Pittsburgh Penguins general managers Craig Patrick and Eddie Johnston will serve as coaches of two of the teams. The other two squads will be coached by former NHL stars Grant Fuhr and Guy Carbonneau.
Last season, 3ICE’s sixth week of competition was held at PPG Paints Arena. That venue is not available this summer as it is undergoing significant renovations in advance of the Penguins’ 2023-24 season.
All profits from 3ICE’s stop in Pittsburgh will benefit the return of Robert Morris’ Division I men’s and women’s programs which have been on hiatus since 2021.
The league, which was founded by Johnston’s son, E.J Johnston Jr., has a touring format over the span of seven weeks. All games have two eight-minute regulation periods with a running clock.
Tickets can be purchased through the league’s website beginning on Thursday.
