Campus clippings: UPG women’s tennis team repeats as regular-season conference champ

Regular season champions for the second straight season.
That was the title bestowed on the Pitt-Greensburg women’s tennis team after an 8-1 win over Penn State Altoona capped a 6-0 run through AMCC play and improved the Bobcats to 8-2.
The doubles teams of Cathryn Rossi and sophomore Isabella Lane; sophomore Abigail Rosman and sophomore Amber Sterrett; and junior Miranda Berkebile and sophomore Kelsey Murphy won for UPG, and Rossi, freshman Mariah Ulery, Sterrett and Lane were victors in singles.
The AMCC championships will be Oct. 16-17 at Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford. UPG will be the No. 1 seed as it seeks its first tournament championship.

Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: Junior libero Madie Marsico found her way into the record books in a loss to visiting Penn State Altoona.
Marsico registered a school-record 45 digs in the Bearcats’ 3-2 defeat. The old record was 44 by Brittany George in a 2014 match.
Junior setter Carly Augustine (Latrobe) had a triple double in the match with 11 kills, 12 digs and 22 assists, and sophomore setter Olivia Persin (Hempfield) had a team-high 25 assists.
Westminster: Senior Samantha Kelly (Penn-Trafford) handed out a match-best 35 assists and added three aces as the Titans took care of Bethany, 3-0.

Men’s golf
West Virginia: Fifth-year senior Mark Goetz (The Kiski School/Greensburg) won his second straight Mountaineer Invitational by shooting a career-low 63 during the final day at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va.
Goetz, who also won the tournament in 2020, shot 9-under-par for the lowest round in school history in relation to par. Logan Perkins shot a school-record 8-under-par 62 in 2020.
Goetz’s three-day total of 14-under 202 was the lowest three-round total in school history. He had 19 birdies and five bogeys during the 54-hole event.

Women’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) ran to a 10th-place finish with a time of 24 minutes, 7 seconds at the Bill Lennox Invitational at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

Women’s swimming
Gannon: Redshirt freshman Francesca Nemetz (Hempfield) won the 200-yard butterfly and finished second in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley as Gannon won 12 of 15 events at Saint Vincent.
