District college football: IUP stays unbeaten, hands Rock its 1st loss

Mak Sexton threw three touchdown passes — two to Duane Brown — and IUP handed Slippery Rock its first loss, 20-12 on Saturday.

Sexton was 19 of 29 for 240 yards, with 10 of those completions and 140 yards going to Brown. Kalen Frazier and Naszhir Taylor intercepted passes for the Crimson Hawks (4-0, 2-0 PSAC).

Noah Grover threw two TD passes for Slippery Rock (4-1, 1-1).

Gannon 21, Seton Hill 10 — Kory Curtis threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns as Gannon (4-1, 2-0) defeated Seton Hill (0-5, 0-2) in PSAC play. Melvin Blanks ran for 95 yards and a touchdown and added a receiving TD. Jake McCormick threw for 111 yards and a touchdown for Seton Hill.

Cal (Pa.) 59, Clarion 14 — JaQuae Jackson caught three touchdown passes and ran for a 1-yard score as Cal (3-2, 2-0 PSAC West) routed Clarion (1-4, 0-2). In all, Jackson caught seven passes for 170 yards. The Vulcans defense recorded five sacks and two interceptions.

Edinboro 16, Mercyhurst 13 — Richie Pekmezian’s third field goal of the game, a 21-yarder with five seconds left, lifted the Fighting Scots (3-2, 2-1) over the Lakers (2-3, 0-2). Thaddeus Standfield caught 12 passes for 129 yards for Edinboro.

Division III

Carnegie Mellon 10, Westminster 0 — Nolan Pitsenberger scored on a 64-yard interception return in the first quarter, one of five turnovers Carnegie Mellon (5-0, 3-0) forced in a PAC victory over Westminster (2-2, 1-1). CMU has won 12 straight games, the longest active streak in Division III. Ben Coyle had 11 tackles and recorded his nation-best eighth sack of the season. Westminster outgained CMU, 212-105.

Grove City 14, Case Western 13 — A blocked extra point turned out to be the difference as Grove City (4-1, 2-1 PAC) held on to defeat Case Western. Clayton Parrish ran for two scores for the Wolverines, including the tying touchdown on a 36-yard run with just under 4:00 to play. Nick Morrow’s extra point provided the margin of victory.

W&J 66, Allegheny 14 — Jacob Pugh ran three touchdowns to lead the Presidents (4-1, 2-1 PAC) over Allegheny (2-3, 1-2). Tanner Volpatti (44 yards) and Dillon Rebuck (64 yards) returned interceptions for touchdowns for W&J.

Division I FCS

St. Francis (Pa.) 39, Central Connecticut State 13 — Cole Doyle threw two touchdown passes and St. Francis ran for three touchdowns to win its home opener. St. Francis now has won three straight, its first three three-game win streak since 2016.

Doyle hit Makai Jackson with a 29-yard touchdown pass to take a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter but threw a pick-six just before halftime when Luquay Washington returned an interception 41 yards for the Blue Devils’ only score of the first half. Doyle completed 7 of 11 passes for 76 yards. The ground game rushed 44 times for 141 yards as St. Francis (3-2, 2-0 Northeastern Conference) led time of possession 33:03 to 26:57.

Shon Mitchell completed just 16 of 38 pass attempts for 188 yards and was picked off twice for Central Connecticut (0-5, 0-2).
