Former Pine-Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec wants to try a third school before his collegiate eligibility expires.
Jurkovec plans to put his name in the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from ESPN. He will be a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility in 2023.
With a good season, his 2024 NFL Draft prospects will improve over what they would be next year.
After throwing for 11,144 yards and 71 touchdowns and leading Pine-Richland to the 2017 PIAA Class 6A championship, Jurkovec (6-foot-5, 214 pounds) attended Notre Dame for two seasons.
He transferred to Boston College in 2020 and was the Eagles’ starting quarterback in each of the past three seasons. In 2020, he threw for a 10-game school-record 2,588 yards with 17 touchdown passes. In a 31-30 overtime victory against Pitt, he threw for 358 yards and three touchdowns.
The following year, he missed six games with a hand injury and threw for 914 yards. During the ‘20 and ‘21 seasons, he worked under BC offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr., who moved to Pitt this year.
Jurkovec’s 2022 season ended Oct. 29 when he left a 13-3 loss at UConn with knee and rib injuries. He is expected to recover in time for spring practice at his new school.
Before the injuries, Jurkovec played behind a weak and injured offensive line that allowed 46 sacks, worst among Power 5 schools and third worst in the nation. He threw 11 touchdown passes, with eight interceptions, without the benefit of a running game. Boston College (3-9) finished the season last in the nation in average yards rushing (63.2).
Eagles coach Jeff Hafley is likely to stick with Jurkovec’s replacement, Emmett Morehead, next season. Morehead threw for 1,165 yards in Jurkovec’s absence.
In 24 games at Boston College, Jurkovec completed 404 of 679 passes for 5,183 yards and 35 touchdowns. He also threw 17 interceptions. Counting his time at Notre Dame, he has thrown for 5,405 yards and 37 touchdowns since leaving high school. Plus, he has shown the mobility to rush for 568 yards and nine touchdowns.
