Defenseman Adam Clendening played in nine games for the Penguins during the 2015-16 season.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Adam Clendening has signed with Ilves of the top league in Finland, the Liiga.

That team announced the transaction via a release Sunday.

The Penguins acquired Clendening as well as forward Nick Bonino and a second-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (which was eventually used to select goaltender Filip Gustavsson) in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a third-round draft pick in 2016.

After appearing in nine games and recording one assist for the Penguins during the 2015-16 season, the right-handed Clendening was traded to the Anaheim Ducks along with forward David Perron in exchange for forward Carl Hagelin.

In addition to the Penguins and Canucks, the 30-year-old Clendening, a native of Niagara Falls, N.Y., has played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Arizona Coyotes and Columbus Blue Jackets over five seasons in the NHL.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
