Kevin Fajt wins Westmoreland County amateur for 3rd consecutive year
Kevin Fajt made it a three-peat July 23 by winning his sixth Westmoreland County Golf Association amateur title and third in a row.
The South Greensburg mayor and Hannastown Golf Club member edged Willowbrook Country Club member Andrew Reynolds by two strokes on the tough Willowbrook course.
Fajt shot a 7-under par 65 during Round 1 and held a four-shot lead over Reynolds and West Penn Amateur champion Sean Knapp. Fajt finished the 36-hole event with a 6-under 138.
Reynolds had two sub-par rounds and finished at 4-under 140. Chuck Tragesser, also a member of Willowbrook, was third with a 3-under 141 while Hannastown’s Michael Robb was fourth at 2-under.
Hannastown’s Ryan Sikora was fifth at 1-under and Hannastown’s Palmer Jackson placed sixth at even par 144. Knapp and Andy Roskosh tied for seventh at 3-over 147, and Westmoreland Country Club’s Luke Kimmich and Greensburg Country Club’s Ron DeNunzio tied for ninth at 4-over 148.
There were 52 golfers in the field.
The next county event will be the 27-hole Senior/Super Senior tournament Aug. 16 at Latrobe Country Club.
Meyer headed to U.S. Amateur
Fox Chapel native and Hannastown Golf Club member Gregor Meyer shot 5-under par 135 to earn medalist honors at the 36-hole United States Golf Association’s amateur qualifier at Willowbrook Country Club on July 24.
Meyer and Reynolds, who shot a 2-under par 138, advanced to compete at the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 14-20, at Cherry Hills Country Club in Parker, Colo.
Meyer, who played for Fox Chapel, was the 2016 WPIAL champion at Oakmont Country Club. He placed fifth in the state in 2019.
The two alternates at the amateur qualifier were Charlie Bundy and Christopher Zhang, both who shot a 2-under 138 but lost in a playoff to Reynolds.
Meyer plays college golf at High Point University. He was named to the Big South first team all-conference team and the Big South all-academic team.
Turowski competes in U.S. Junior Amateur
Penn-Trafford senior Nick Turowski competed in the United States Golf Association’s Junior Amateur at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C. which began on Monday.
Turowski qualified June 5 at Avalon Field Club in New Castle by placing second after shooting a 1-over par 71. Benjamin Siriboury took medalist honors by shooting an even par 70.
Turowski shot a 7-over par 150 in stroke play competition and did not qualify for match play.
