The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their eight-game losing streak with an offensive outburst that started with a scratch and ended with a quadruple double.
Kevin Newman was a late add to the lineup when Anthony Alford was scratched with back spasms. The shortstop tied a major league record with four doubles as the Pirates set a season high with 19 hits in beating the Milwaukee Brewers, 14-4, in the first game of a split seven-inning doubleheader Saturday afternoon at PNC Park.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Newman, who went 4 for 4 with four runs and two RBIs out of the No. 8 hole. “You grow up as a kid, and your dream is to play in the major leagues. When I was coming off the field and I was told that I was part of a major league record, it’s something that hits deep because that’s what you dream about as a kid. Super honored and glad I was in there today and I was able to do that.”
The Brewers belted 12 hits, including home runs by Rowdy Tellez and Avisail Garcia, in a 6-0 win in the second game before 24,081 at PNC Park. The split doubleheader drew combined crowds of 41,072 for the two games, although the 16,991 paid attendance for Game 1 can be attributed to Friday’s free T-shirt giveaway but was postponed because of inclement weather.
The Pirates (42-75) snapped out of a funk, as their 19 hits equaled the total from their previous four games, including a one-hit shutout and a two-hit loss against the St. Louis Cardinals to start the six-game homestand.
Newman had a .218 batting average and .541 OPS entering the game, threatening for one of the worst seasons by a Pirates hitter in franchise history. Now, he’s put his name in the MLB record books, joining Paul Waner (May 20, 1932) and Adam Frazier (July 21, 2019) to become the third player in Pirates history to have four doubles in one game.
“I think any time you see major league history being made, it’s very cool and very cool to be there to experience that,” said Pirates right-hander Bryse Wilson, who made his PNC Park debut. “I couldn’t be more happy for him, putting his name on that list, and that’s very tough to do. I’m pretty sure he did it in four straight innings as well as four straight at-bats, so that’s even cooler to be able to do that.”
Newman was one of six Pirates players with multi-hit games as they eclipsed their previous best of 16 hits in a 10-4 win July 24 at the San Francisco Giants. Bryan Reynolds went 2 for 3, with a home run and four RBIs, and left fielder Hoy Park went 3 for 5.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton praised Newman’s aggressive approach at the plate, especially for his second hit that had an exit velocity of 100.7 mph and went 394 feet off the visiting bullpen fence.
“Swung the bat well,” Shelton said. “Much needed for us and him.”
The NL Central-leading Brewers (71-47) got off to a good start when Kolten Wong hit a leadoff home run for a 1-0 lead, driving Wilson’s 3-1 sinker 415 feet to right field for his ninth homer. The Brewers increased it to 3-0 in the second. Brewers lefty Brett Anderson (4-6) struck out the side in the first inning, but Rodolfo Castro smoked a two-out double in the second. Newman started a four-run third for the Pirates with a leadoff double, reaching third on Wilson’s sacrifice bunt and scoring on Park’s infield single. Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on a dribbler, and Bryan Reynolds drew a walk to load the bases.
The Pirates cut it to 3-2 when Colin Moran grounded to Rowdy Tellez, who tagged first and made a late throw that Park beat to the plate. Stallings caused more chaos when he singled to shortstop Willy Adames, whose throw skipped past Tellez and allowed Hayes and Reynolds to score for a 4-3 lead.
Taylor sent Wilson’s 0-2 changeup 390 feet into the left-field bleachers for his 10th homer to tie it at 4-4.
Chasen Shreve (1-0), who walked Wong before striking out Christian Yelich, Adames and Eduardo Escobar in succession in the fifth inning, earned the win for the Pirates.
Gregory Polanco led off the fourth with a single, and Newman drilled his second double off the left-center fence, setting up John Nogowski’s pinch-hit RBI single to left to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead. Hayes singled to score Newman to make it 6-4.
The Pirates batted around the order in a six-run fifth.
, as Newman hit a two-RBI double, Wilmer Difo added a pinch-hit single, Hayes drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Reynolds hit a two-run shot to right field for his 21st home run. Reynolds added a two-run single to right in the sixth to give the Pirates a double-digit lead.
“There’s no hiding it. Obviously, we were scuffling. So to break out and have a game like this, kind of get the energy back, that fun baseball feeling, it’s huge for us,” Newman said. “Looking to build on that and keep riding that groove, for sure. It’s big for us.”
