Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett looks to pass during an NFL football game against the Los Angeles Rams, Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023, in Inglewood, Calif.

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has the “it” factor, we’re told. The clutch gene.

That’s good. Because what Pickett doesn’t have are the raw statistics.

Pickett has passed for over 300 yards once in 19 NFL games (18 starts). He’s thrown two touchdown passes once. His passer rating has been over 90 three times.

Winning quarterbacks must have better numbers. The odd big quarter isn’t enough. Nor is executing the occasional big drive with the game on the line.

Yeah, I know: The Steelers are 11-4 in their last 15 games.

Were any of those playoff games? Did any of those wins clinch a division title, or a postseason spot?

No quarterback has a great career based solely on clutch. Eventually, a QB must also pile up stats.

Sunday’s home game against Jacksonville would be a good time for Pickett to start doing that.

The Jaguars have a great run defense, ranking fourth at 3.6 yards per carry. The Steelers can’t run the ball, ranking 29th at 3.3 yards per carry.

For the Steelers to beat Jacksonville, Pickett will have to throw for over 300 yards and at least two touchdowns. That’s what the game and opponent will dictate.

Here’s predicting Pickett does it.

If he does, the Steelers will be 5-2. Their next two games are at Acrisure Stadium vs. Tennessee and Green Bay, both beatable.

The Steelers can use these three home games to get a playoff spot.

After that, the Steelers visit Cleveland and Cincinnati.

The Steelers can use those two games to win the AFC North.

If you’re going to dream, dream big. But it will take a lot more than mere clutch.
