Miguel Andujar breaks up perfect game in 6th, Pirates pound 13 hits to rally past Yankees
For the first five innings, the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t get on base.
After that, they couldn’t stop scoring.
The Pirates overcame a five-run deficit to beat the New York Yankees, 9-6, on Thursday night in a Grapefruit League game at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
The Yankees built a 5-0 lead as right-hander Clarke Schmidt recorded seven strikeouts and didn’t allow a runner over five perfect innings. The Pirates pounded out 13 hits against five pitchers over the final four innings.
Miguel Andujar, who was claimed off waivers from the Yankees last September, broke up the perfect game with a double off Jimmy Cordero in the sixth. The Pirates scored four runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to rally for the comeback win.
Five days after holding the Yankees to two hits in three scoreless innings, Pirates starter Johan Oviedo allowed two hits, three walks and an earned run in 3 1/3 innings.
After DJ LeMahieu’s leadoff single off Oviedo, Aaron Judge had an RBI double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Judge reached third on a throwing error by shortstop Oneil Cruz and scored on Giancarlo Stanton’s groundout to make it 2-0. Cruz is riding a five-game hit streak in which he’s 6 for 18 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs.
LeMahieu once again served as the spark in the fifth, this time against Yohan Ramirez, with a line-drive double to center field. Anthony Rizzo drew a walk, and Stanton hit a two-run single to left for a 4-0 lead. Stanton advanced to third on an error by left fielder Cal Mitchell and scored on Josh Donaldson’s double to left to make it 5-0.
Cordero replaced Schmidt in the sixth, and Andujar hit a leadoff double to center, advanced to third on an Austin Hedges groundout and scored on Cruz’s double to cut it to 5-1.
The Pirates tied the score in the seventh. Drew Maggi, who replaced first baseman Carlos Santana (left knee discomfort), hit his team-best third home run with a two-run shot off Wandy Peralta to left that cut the Yankees’ lead to 5-3. After Mitchell singled, Albert Abreu replaced Peralta and gave up an RBI single to Travis Swaggerty and an RBI double to Carter Bins to make it 5-5.
It was against Demarcus Evans in the eighth that the Pirates took control. Sammy Siani drove in Maggi with a single to take a 6-5 lead, and doubles by Andujar and Bins extended it to 9-5.
The Yankees cut it to 9-6 when they loaded the bases against Juan Minaya in the eighth, and pinch runner Kyle Battle scored when Brandon Lockridge grounded into a forceout.
Osvaldo Bido is expected to start for the Pirates against Luis Patino and the Tampa Bay Rays at 1:05 p.m. Friday at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla.
