Minor league report: Joel Blomqvist returns in Penguins' win

Goaltender Joel Blomqvist made 22 saves on 23 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 4-1 win against the Springfield Thunderbirds at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

The result improved Blomqvist’s American Hockey League record to 8-5-3. Due to an undisclosed injury, Blomqvist’s most recent contest at any level prior to Saturday came as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 2.

Forward Atley Calvert had a goal and an assist for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (38-22-7-1, 84 points), which snapped a four-game losing streak (0-4-0) while defenseman Jack St. Ivany contributed two assists.

Per the team’s radio broadcast, Penguins defenseman Sebastian Aho was scratched due to an illness.

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the Bridgeport Islanders on Sunday, 3 p.m.


Goaltender Jaxon Castor made 18 saves on 19 shots for the Wheeling Nailers in a 3-1 win against the Trois-Rivières Lions at the Colisée Vidéotron in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

The result boosted Castor’s record to 6-6-1 and secured the second seed in the North Division for the Nailers in the upcoming Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Forwards Matt Koopman, Jordan Martel and Lars Rodne each scored goals for Wheeling (43-24-3-1, 90 points) which extended a winning streak to three games.

The Nailers will close out the regular season with a road contest against the Lions on Sunday, 3 p.m.
