Minor league report: Penguins lose in Joel Blomqvist’s debut, Nailers take Game 2

In his North American debut, goaltender Joel Blomqvist made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins who lost to the Springfield Thunderbirds, 3-1, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. on Saturday.

A native of Finland, the 20-year-old Blomqvist was the Pittsburgh Penguins’ second-round pick (No. 52 overall) in the 2020 NHL draft.

Forward Radim Zohorna scored the lone goal for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (35-30-4-4).

Highlights:

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday, 3 p.m.

Goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon made 41 saves on 43 shots for the Wheeling Nailers in a 4-2 road win against the Fort Wayne Komets at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. in Game 2 of their Central Division semifinal series.

Wheeling leads the series, 2-0.

Forward Justin Almeida recorded two assists for the Nailers while forwards Josh Cockrell, Cam Hausinger, Sean Josling and defenseman Dylan MacPherson each scored goals for Wheeling.

Highlights:

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling. W.Va.
