Bob Lilley teams don’t generally lose two games in a row, but on Sunday night the New York Red Bulls II handed the Riverhounds their second straight loss with a late penalty kick in stoppage time.

New York was pressing in the 94th minute and a pass came in to Jake LaCava in the middle of the box. But the midfielder, who subbed on in the 60th minute, was taken out in the middle of the box by Pittsburgh’s Ryan James, which resulted in a penalty kick. Deri Corfe scored from the spot to push his team ahead 2-1 for the victory.

The Red Bulls took advantage of their home field advantage as they had a slight edge in possession, 52.8 to 47.2. They created more opportunities with nine shots to Pittsburgh’s eight, and they also tallied four shots on goal compared to Pittsburgh’s two.

Although, the Riverhounds (2-2) didn’t come away with their third victory of the season, they did get the scoring started in New Jersey.

They took the lead in the ninth minute, when captain Kenardo Forbes delivered a free kick from the left side of the pitch to the back post, where defender Skylar Thomas came running in and finished off the set play with a volley to the left side of the net.

Forbes’ assist was his fifth of the season and 36th career assist of the USL Championship regular season, which brings him within one of Maikel Chang for the all-time lead.

New York responded in the 34th minute when Caden Clark delivered a ball over the top of the Riverhounds defense to New Jersey native Omar Sowe. The 19-year-old settled the ball down with his chest and hit a left-footed shot past Pittsburgh keeper Danny Vitiello, who was making his first professional start.

Sunday’s contest was Pittsburgh’s third match in nine days and now the Riverhounds are off until Saturday when they take on Philadelphia Union II at 7 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
