The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned veteran defenseman Taylor Fedun to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, he cleared waivers.

The 34-year-old right-hander served as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s captain last season, appearing in 44 AHL games and scoring 16 points (five goals, 11 assists).

Fedun missed the past handful of days of practice in training camp because of an undisclosed injury but had been skating before practice. He played in one game this preseason.

Notes: Forward Teddy Blueger skated before Wednesday’s practice in Cranberry. Sidelined with an undisclosed injury since Sept. 28, Blueger remains “day-to-day,” according to coach Mike Sullivan. … Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened its preseason with a 3-2 home win against the rival Hershey Bears at Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday. Forwards Corey Andonovski and Max Johnson each recorded a goal and an assist for the Penguins while forward Justin Adamo also scored a goal.
