Penguins defensemen Erik Karlsson, Marcus Pettersson advance to semifinal round with Sweden

A look at how players with connections to the Pittsburgh Penguins have done in the ongoing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship tournament:

Sweden advanced to the semifinal round with a 2-1 overtime win in the quarterfinal round against Finland at Ostravar Arena in Vítkovice, Czechia on Thursday.

Penguins defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson were each held without a point while stationed on the second pairing.

Logging 26:36 of ice time on 25 shifts, Karlsson had three shots. Pettersson recorded 18:33 of ice time on 22 shifts and two shots.

Penguins forward Valtteri Puustinen recorded an assist for Finland. Skating on the right wing of the fourth line, Puustinen clocked 14:22 of ice time on 16 shifts and had two shots.

Fellow Penguins forward Jesse Puljujarvi, primarily deployed on the right wing of Finland’s third line, was held without a point while recording 14:00 of ice time on 17 shifts and two shots.

Appearing in eight games during the tournament, Puljujarvi finished with five points (three goals, two assists). Puustinen played in seven games and recorded two points (one goal, one assist).

Highlights:

Sweden will face Czechia in the semifinal round on Saturday, 8:20 a.m. (EDT). Finland finished the tournament in eighth place.


Penguins forward Michael Bunting was held without a point for Canada in a 6-3 win against Slovakia at the O2 Arena in Prague.

Opening the contest on the left wing of the fourth line, Bunting logged 14:52 of ice time on 17 shifts and had four shots as well as two penalty minutes.

Highlights:

Canada will face Switzerland in the semifinal round on Saturday, 12:20 p.m.


Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic dressed but did not play for the United States in a 1-0 loss to Czechia at the O2 Arena.

Highlights:

Nedeljkovic appeared in four games during the the tournament and had a 3-1-0 record, 2.02 goals-against average and .875 save percentage.

The United States finished the tournament in fifth place.
