Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry worked out on the ice at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday before his team’s optional morning skate in advance of a home contest against the Vancouver Canucks.

It marked Jarry’s first action on the ice since he suffered a suspected right leg injury during a 2-1 road loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 2.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan offered something of an update on Jarry for the first time since the goaltender was injured.

“(Jarry) skated this morning,” Sullivan said. “That’s the first time he’s been on the ice. Did well with the first skate. … From a status standpoint, I’m going to say he’s day to day. In saying that, I don’t think it’s imminent. He’s not longer term, let’s just say that.”

A two-time All-Star, Jarry has appeared in 25 games this season and has a 15-5-4 record, a 2.75 goals against average, a .918 save percentage and one shutout. He has missed the past two games due to his injury.

Notes:

• Jarry was joined on the ice by forward Josh Archibald and defenseman Jeff Petry prior to the morning skate.

Archibald, currently designated to injured reserve, has been sidelined for the past eight games due to an undisclosed ailment. He remains “day to day” according to Sullivan.

As for Petry, he remains designated to long-term injured reserve due to a suspected left arm injury that has sidelined for the past 11 games.

• Forward Ryan Poehling continues to rehabilitate an undisclosed malady off the ice. He has missed six of the past seven games.

• Goaltender Casey DeSmith is expected to start for the Penguins on Tuesday. In 15 games this season, DeSmith has a 5-8-2 record, a 3.00 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

DeSmith has played the Canucks in two games throughout his career and has a 1-0-1 record, a 1.49 goals against average, .945 save percentage and one shutout.

• Defenseman Kris Letang remains in Montreal to attend to family following the death of his father, Claude Fouquet.

• Those who attended the Penguins’ optional skate included:

Forwards – Teddy Blueger, Jake Guentzel, Danton Heinen, Brock McGinn, Drew O’Connor, Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust

Defensemen – Mark Friedman, P.O Joseph, Marcus Pettersson, Chad Ruhwedel, Ty Smith

Goaltenders – DeSmith, Dustin Tokarski

• Penguins forward Kasperi Kapanen has 199 career assists.

• The Canucks are expected to start goaltender Spencer Martin. In 22 games this season, Martin has an 11-8-1 record, a 3.67 goals against average and an .881 save percentage.

On Oct. 28, Martin directed the Canucks to a 5-1 home win against the Penguins by making 34 saves on 35 shots.

• Canucks forward Bo Horvat has 199 career goals.

• Canucks forward Tanner Person, a former member of the Penguins, is currently designated to injured reserve due to a hand injury.
