Penguins expected to start goaltender Tristan Jarry against Hurricanes
The Penguins are scheduled to start goaltender Tristan Jarry for Tuesday’s home game against the Carolina Hurricanes at PPG Paints Arena.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced Jarry’s status following an optional morning skate.
In 13 games this season, Jarry has an 8-3-2 record, a 2.90 goals against average, a .914 save percentage and one shutout.
Jarry has played in four career games against the Hurricanes and has a 1-3-0 record, a 3.56 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.
Notes:
• Those in attendance for the Penguins’ optional morning skate included:
Forwards – Teddy Blueger, Danton Heinen, Evgeni Malkin
Defensemen – P.O Joseph, Marcus Pettersson, Chad Ruhwedel
Goaltender – Casey DeSmith
• Forward Kasperi Kapanen is expected to return to the Penguins’ lineup after being a healthy scratch for the past seven games. In 13 games this season, Kapanen has five points (one goal, four assists) while averaging 12:28 of ice time.
• Heinen is expected to be a healthy scratch. He has gone 17 consecutive games without a goal.
• During Monday’s practice at the Hunt Armory in Shadyside, the Penguins reconfigured their power-play units. The top unit saw forward Bryan Rust rejoin a group of Malkin as well as forwards Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel and defenseman Kris Letang. In the team’s previous three games, the top unit had three forwards and two defenseman, including Jeff Petry.
The second unit included Kapanen as well as forwards Jeff Carter, Rickard Rakell, Jason Zucker and Petry.
“We could talk forever about the decision to go away from the four forwards we had,” Sullivan said. “I once had a college coach who told me that the best way to start with a power play is to start with your best five players, then figure it out from there. There might be something to be said for that.
“We believe in the group we have. We know we have some different combinations. We know we have some versatility there. Jeff Petry is a good power-play guy. Bryan Rust is a pretty good power-play guy. (Rakell) is a pretty good power-play guy. There are a lot of options there that we can go to.”
•Rakell has 199 career assists.
• The Hurricanes are expected to start rookie goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov. In six games this season, Kochetkov has a 2-1-3 record, a 2.33 goals against average, a .912 save percentage and one shutout.
Kochetkov, 23, has never played the Penguins.
• Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook has appeared in 499 career games.
