Penguins expected to start goaltender Tristan Jarry against Hurricanes
Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry is scheduled to start in Thursday’s home game against the Carolina Hurricanes at PPG Paints Arena.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced Jarry’s status following an optional morning skate.
In 21 games this season, Jarry has a 15-3-3 record, a 2.60 goals against average, a .922 save percentage and one shutout.
Jarry has faced the Hurricanes in one game this season. During a 3-2 overtime home loss on Nov. 29, Jarry made 36 saves on 39 shots.
Notes:
• Forwards Josh Archibald and Ryan Poehling will be sidelined for Thursday’s contest due to undisclosed injuries.
Archibald was absent for Tuesday’s 3-2 home win against the New York Rangers. In 30 games this season, Archibald has six points (four goals, two assists) while averaging 10 minutes, 15 seconds of ice time, the second-lowest figure on the active NHL roster. Despite that limited deployment, Archibald leads the Penguins in penalties drawn (14) and hits (109).
Poehling was injured late Tuesday’s game. Appearing in 30 games this season, Poehling has eight points (four goals, four assists) while clocking 11:15 of average ice time per contest.
• With Archibald and Poehling each sidelined, forward Drew O’Connor is expected to be in the lineup. In three NHL games this season — all in early November — O’Connor has no points while logging 8:32 of average ice time per contest.
Recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Dec. 14, O’Connor has been a healthy scratch for the past three games.
Despite being on the NHL roster for the past eight days, O’Connor remains Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s leading scorer with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 20 games.
• Those who participated in Thursday’s optional morning skate for the Penguins included:
Forwards – Evgeni Malkin, Drew O’Connor
Defensemen – Brian Dumoulin, Mark Friedman, Chad Ruhwedel
Goaltender – Casey DeSmith
• Penguins forward Jeff Carter is scheduled to appear in his 1,200th career game. He also has 399 career assists.
• Penguins forward Danton Heinen has 99 career assists.
• The Hurricanes enter this contest with a six-game winning streak.
• Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns has 799 career points.
• Hurricanes forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi has 99 career points.
