Pittsburgh Penguins prospects Emil Jarventie, a forward, and Kalle Kangas, a defenseman, have signed amateur tryout contracts (ATO) with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL) for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

Native of Finland, both players were seventh-round selections by the Penguins in the 2023 NHL Draft with Jarventie being selected No. 217 overall and Kanges going at No. 223.

The left-handed Jarventie (5-foot-10, 167 pounds) has primarily played with KooVee of Finland’s second-tier Mestis league. In 41 games, the 19-year-old scored 21 points (nine goals, 21 assists).

He also played in four games and scored one goal with Ilves of the Liiga, that country’s top league.

Kangas, a left-handed shot, predominantly played for Jokerit, also of the Mestis, this season. Appearing in 40 games, the 19-year-old Kangas (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) posted nine points (four goals, five assists).

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has five games remaining on its regular season schedule and has qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs.

While each player’s ATO contract is for the remainder of the AHL’s season, both players are committed to Finland’s roster for the Under-20 Five Nations tournament which is scheduled to be staged April 17 to 21 in Poprad, Slovakia.

Neither player has signed an NHL contract.
