In 26 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, defenseman Ty Smith has scored 14 points (four goals, 10 assists).

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled defenseman Ty Smith and forward Drake Caggiula from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Wednesday. In corresponding transactions, forwards Josh Archibald and Ryan Poehling have been placed on injured reserve.

Acquired via a trade with the New Jersey Devils in July, Smith has yet to appear in an NHL game this season. A first-round pick (No. 17 overall) by the Devils in 2018, the left-handed Smith has been stationed with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to this point of the 2022-23 campaign almost exclusively due to salary cap concerns.

In 26 AHL games, Smith, 22, has 14 points (four goals, 10 assists).

During the preseason, Pittsburgh Penguins coaches dressed Smith frequently as he appeared in five of six games and scored two points (one goal, one assist).

For Caggiula, this marks the second time this season the left-hander has been recalled to the NHL roster. Previously summoned Oct. 23, Caggiula, a free-agent signing this past offseason, appeared in three games and did not record a point while averaging 7:28 of ice time.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, the 28-year-old Caggiula has played in 23 games and has 14 points (four goals, 14 assists).

Archibald’s designation to injured reserve is retroactive to Dec. 18. An undisclosed ailment has sidelined him for the past four games.

In 30 games this season, Archibald has six points (four goals, two assists) while averaging 10:15 of ice time per contest, one of the lowest figures on the team. Despite that limited deployment, Archibald leads the Penguins in penalties drawn (14) and hits (109).

For Poehling, his designation to injured reserve is retroactive to Dec. 20 as he has missed the past three games due to an undisclosed ailment.

Appearing in 30 games this season, Poehling has eight points (four goals, four assists) while clocking 11:15 of average ice time per contest.

These transactions come one day after defenseman Chad Ruhwedel suffered an undisclosed injury during a 5-1 road loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday. No substantive update on his status has been provided by the team.

The Penguins are scheduled to host the Detroit Red Wings at PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday, shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Elsewhere with the organization, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins assigned forward Jordan Frasca and goaltender Taylor Gauthier to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.
