The Pittsburgh Penguins summoned one of the organization’s top prospects Tuesday when forward Sam Poulin was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL).

In a corresponding transaction, forward Noel Acciari was placed on long-term injured reserve.

A first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, Poulin has appeared in 36 AHL games this season and has scored 27 points (13 goals, 14 points).

Should the 23-year-old Poulin dress in Tuesday’s home game against the Carolina Hurricanes at PPG Paints Arena, he would be making his season debut at the NHL level.

His only previous NHL experience came during the 2022-23 season when he appeared in three games and recorded one assist while averaging 9:58 of ice time per contest.

Poulin (6-foot-1, 208 pounds) is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $863,333.

Acciari suffered an undisclosed injury during Sunday’s 5-4 overtime road loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Barring a miraculous push for a postseason berth by the underachieving Penguins, Acciari’s season is done.

NHL rules dictate players designated to long-term injured reserve must miss at least 10 games and 24 days on the NHL calendar. For Acciari, the 24th day comes April 17, the same day as the team’s regular season finale, a road game against the New York Islanders.

Primarily stationed as the fourth-line center, the right-handed Acciari has appeared in 55 games this season and has scored seven points (four goals, three assists) while averaging 12:58 of ice time per contest.

Acciari has already missed 15 games this season due to various injuries.
