In 10 games with the San Jose Sharks last season, defenseman Nikolai Khnyzov had one assist.

The Pittsburgh Penguins released defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov from a professional tryout contract (PTO) on Friday.

A left-handed shot, Knyzhov (6-foot-3, 222 pounds) did not appear in either of the Penguins’ first two games during the ongoing preseason.

The Penguins announced they had signed Knyzhov to a PTO on Aug. 22. He was the only player they had signed to such a contract for training camp.

Knyzhov, 26, spent the previous five seasons with the San Jose Sharks organization. Last season, he appeared in 10 NHL games and recorded one assist while averaging 17:39 of ice time per contest.

Following this transaction, the Penguins now have 51 players remaining in training camp.
