The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Owen Pickering to a three-year entry-level contract Saturday. According Cap Friendly, the contract will carry a salary cap hit of $950,000.

Pickering was the team’s first-round pick (No. 21 overall) at the NHL Draft earlier this month.

The contract will begin when Pickering commences his professional career. He is expected to return to his junior team, the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Swift Current Broncos, next season.

Pickering (6-foot-4, 180 pounds) appeared in 62 games for Swift Current last season and scored 33 points (nine goals, 24 assists).
