Stroke-play medalist Jimmy Ellis, a Peters Township alum, was ousted in his opening match at the 124th U.S. Amateur on Wednesday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Ellis, who shot 10-under 132 to take the top seed, including a 9-under 61 in his second round, was upset by Ethan Fang, 2-up.

Their match was all square through 12 holes but Fang, of Plano, Texas, won hole No. 13 with a par, No. 15 with a birdie and the closed out Ellis with another birdie on No. 18.

Ellis, who lives in Atlantic Beach, Fla., won No. 16 with a birdie.

Another local player, Palmer Jackson, also lost in the first round.

Jackson, a Franklin Regional and Notre Dame graduate, fell to Penn State grad student Patrick Sheehan, 2 and 1.

Jackson never led and lost holes 17 and 18 despite Sheehan closing with a pair of bogeys.
