The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired left-handed pitcher Eric Stout from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in exchange for cash.

He was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis and added to the 40-man roster.

Stout, 29, allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings in two games for the Cubs this season. The left-handed reliever was designated for assignment June 16.

Stout (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) had 16 appearances with Triple-A Iowa this season, going 2-2 with two saves, a 3.94 ERA (13 earned runs in 29 2/3 innings) and 48 strikeouts.

Prior to this season, Stout’s only previous only major-league experience came with Kansas City, making three appearances for the Royals during the 2018 season. He has combined to go 23-18 with 17 saves, a 4.39 ERA, 344 strikeouts against 161 walks in 202 appearances (19 starts) across parts of eight minor league seasons in the Royals (2014-18), Reds (2019), Marlins (2021) and Cubs (2022) organizations.

He was a 13th-round selection by the Royals in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.
